Puños Arriba Awards Ceremony Shut Down

6 Apr

[Gracias a Emetrece Productions…English below]

Puños Arriba 2009 the first national Cuban hip-hop awards ceremony produced locally by Matraka, took place last Saturday at the Rivera Theater in Havana. The show included performances by Anónimo Consejo, Silvito el Libre, Cuentas Claras, Raudel de Escuadrón Patriota, Soldier Squad, Maikel Xtremo and many more. However, before the show’s final appearances and with awards pending to be distributed, the entire event was shut down. The only justification given to the audiences was that the event had to stop due to “pressure.” The awards left to be announced included Most Popular CD and Album of the Year, both of which were intended for Los Aldeanos. The climactic ending of the show programmed to include a performance by Los Aldeanos featuring Papá Humbertico El Discípulo and Anderson of their song ‘El rap es guerra’ (Rap is War) was unfortunately never realized.

K’naan: Troubadour in Stores Feb. 24, 2009

23 Feb

It must have been sometime in 2005 – my memory is dreadful so the detailsKnaan are fuzzy.  I had agreed to check out what (I believe) was to be the release party for K’naan‘s debut full length, The Dusty Foot Philosopher.

I met up with the friend who had invited me and headed to the spot. Upon approaching the venue, I remember thinking we had the wrong address.

But that was it – a church. There were more than a few supporters confused about the locale as well. I remember one Somali brother I had gone to school with refusing to enter (he thought it would be disrespectful).

Brother-man missed quite a show. K’naan’s live performance was charged with passion and sincerity as he offered up songs from The Dusty Foot Philosopher. The album on a whole embodied both the beauty and tragedy that characterize human existence, with Africa resonating in every vocal pitch, drum beat and guitar string.

Troubadour, K’naan’s second studio LP is available tomorrow (February 24, 2009), and this time, K’naan’s coming with big names like Mos Def, Damian Marley and Adam Levine. Check the video “Dreamer” below, followed by a list of concert dates.

Thanks Erykah! (Erykah Badu and Jay Electronica have a baby!)

2 Feb

Today I was in a hip hop mood all afternoon! I’m an R&B girl at heart, but every once in awhile you just need something to get you amped! I was head nodding HARD to what little hip hop I have in my iPod…which probably made the folks on the GO Train very nervous… I had never heard of Jay Electronica before I read that he and Erykah Badu welcomed her 3rd lil baby into the world yesterday. (She loves her some rappers doesn’t she? I ain’t mad at that!!!) I figured I’d give her boyfriend a listen, I mean she’s so fly her man must be too, right? Ms. Badu has yet to lead me astray…lol. His music fit my mood perfectly :).

*Congratulations to Erykah Badu and Jay Electronica on the birth of their little baby girl!!! Can’t wait to hear what they decide to name her….

*Update* Folks have had a lot to say about Ms. Badu and some of her choices, this is her “Hi, haters” rebuttal:

Jay Electronica – “I Feel Good”

So now that I’ve been introduced to Jay Electronica, which other songs of his should I check for next… Suggestions?

Jazmine Sullivan – Lions, Tigers & Bears

1 Feb

One of the songs off the “Fearless” album that moved me on first listen…video’s ok too.

That “love thing” can be scary…REALLY, REALLY scary…and I think the lyrics in this capture that feeling. (Although, dem animals der are pretty up there in the fear department.) Check for the little circus melody in the background…

Also: Big up to Jazmine on her 5 Grammy nods!!! She deserves it; her voice is dangerous!
